Team enablement through DevOps and Templates
Data Science Consultant · 4most
February 2023 – September 2024
Overview
When I joined 4most, the business was still heavily SAS-based, while the wider banking and financial services industry was beginning a significant shift towards Python. As one of the company’s early Python power users, I helped accelerate that transition internally while supporting client-facing data science delivery.
My internal focus was reducing the time it took consultants to become productive on Python-based projects. I supported this through Git and version control training, reusable Python notebook templates, and practical upskilling initiatives for consultants between client engagements.
The templates covered common data science tasks consultants were likely to encounter on client site, combining explanatory markdown with reusable code examples. Over time, this became an ongoing capability-building programme, with consultants contributing additional templates while practising agile workflows. My role was to review pull requests, maintain quality and embed better engineering practices across the team.
Alongside this, I was deployed into financial services and insurance clients to review early-stage Python implementations, improve modelling workflows and build bespoke additions to existing systems. This work often included advising client teams on better development practices and, where needed, running workshops to help them adopt more robust Python workflows.
Key Achievements
90% Faster Project Onboarding
Built reusable ML frameworks and coding templates that reduced project onboarding time by 90% and standardised best practices across consulting teams. These frameworks provided a solid foundation for new projects while ensuring consistency and quality.
- Implemented husky across all internal repositories to enforce coding standards
- Comprehensive template library covering common ML project workflows
- Worked with IT to migrate python access to run via UV to meet project requirements and handle version vunerabilities
- Built up an upskilling programme for consultants to work on when they were off-project
AI Subject Matter Expert
Served as AI subject matter expert across credit risk and insurance business units, advising clients on ML strategy, AutoML adoption, and delivering Proof of Concept (POC) solutions to demonstrate business value. This role involved translating complex AI concepts into actionable business strategies.
- Strategic AI roadmap development for clients
- AutoML platform evaluation and implementation guidance
- Rapid POC development to validate AI use cases
- Technical due diligence and architecture reviews
Reusable Framework Development
Developed comprehensive ML frameworks that encapsulated best practices, common patterns, and reusable components. These frameworks enabled teams to focus on business logic rather than infrastructure setup, significantly improving productivity.
- Data preprocessing and feature engineering pipelines
- Model training and evaluation frameworks
- Graphics modules for presentations
